Eloi Hebert and the 100 year old Cross

Written Submission by Wayne P Hebert:

Grandpa Eloi (L-Wah) Hebert (4-22-1862/3-29-1925) was married four times and had ten children. He married his first wife in 1879. She passed away after three years of marriage. They had two children that died in infancy. Eloi married a second time and his wife died three months later. Tabitha Coley Hebert was his third wife. She died from smallpox in Welsh, La. In 1900. They had four children; Eva, Harry, Grace, and Roy. He then married Pamela Hebert and they had four children; Hazel, Allen, Evans, and Ralph. Eloi and Pamela were second cousins and he was twenty-one years older. A family story has Eloi visiting Pamela when she was a young child. He was in his twenties. He sat her on his knee and jokingly told her he would marry her some day.

According to Eloi’s obituary, his special request was to have his remains carried by pall bearers to the Lacassine Cemetery which was less than a half mile away. They were followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends. The wooden cross on his tomb will be 100 years old in March 2025. It is still in good condition and is well attended to by family.

Eloi was named after his maternal grandfather Jean Eloi Hebert (11-10-1799/11-30-1881). He and his sons were prominent familes around the Grand Lake, Big Lake, and Hebert’s Landing area.

A 100 year anniversary mass is scheduled at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lacassine in March 2025.
